How are Dangerous Goods Classified?

Producers and exporters of potentially dangerous goods and products must use appropriate packaging for the correct category of goods. There are nine different categories or classes:

Class 1: Explosives
Class 2: Gases
Class 3: Flammable liquids
Class 4: Flammable solids (including substances which risk spontaneous combustion and substances which emit flammable gases on contact with water)
Class 5: Oxidising substances and organic peroxides
Class 6: Toxic and infectious substances
Class 7: Radioactive materials
Class 8: Corrosives
Class 9: Miscellaneous dangerous goods

Dangerous Goods Packaging Categories

Kimmo has a full range of products available to safeguard hazardous goods in transit. We have three categories of primary packaging to cover all categories of dangerous goods. Group I is the most hazardous (high-danger goods), Group II applies to medium-danger goods and Group III refers to low-danger goods.

Packaging Group I (X)

The sturdiest packaging category, suitable for the most dangerous goods including substances like cyanide or infectious viruses. These packages must pass a drop test of 1.8m in order to qualify as acceptable.

Packaging Group II (Y)

This packaging is appropriate for hazardous products like batteries and explosives intended for air freight shipping. Packages in this category must pass a drop test of 1.2m.

Packaging Group III (Z)

This category can be used for flammable fluids and batteries that will be transported by truck. These packages can safely handle a drop test of 0.8m.

Note that it is acceptable to use Group I packaging to ship less dangerous products, provided gross weight limits are not exceeded. However, more robust packaging designs typically cost more than those in less stringent packaging groups.
